4 Days in Egypt: What You Can Actually See

Four days in Egypt sounds like a compromise, and it is — but it is a specific and rather good one. It is not a shortened version of a normal Egypt trip. It is one thing done properly: the Nile between Aswan and Luxor.

That is why every four-day trip on this site is a cruise. There is no four-day package that also includes Cairo, because there should not be one. Adding the Pyramids of Giza to four days means two internal flights, two hotel changes and roughly six usable hours at the plateau. It is a bad trip, and we do not sell it.

What four days actually covers

The standard run is three nights on the water, boarding in Aswan and disembarking in Luxor. Boats are moored the night you board, so the first evening is Aswan and the last morning is Luxor.

In Aswan that means Philae Temple on its island, and usually the Unfinished Obelisk in the granite quarry — the single clearest explanation of how the Egyptians moved stone that exists anywhere.

Sailing north the boat stops at Kom Ombo, which sits right on the bank and is usually visited at dusk, and at Edfu, the most completely preserved temple in Egypt and the best surviving answer to the question of what an Egyptian temple was actually like when it was in use.

Luxor is the last morning and the first half of the last day: Karnak and Luxor Temple on the east bank, or the Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut's temple on the west. Not both. Which one you get depends on the boat's schedule, and it is worth asking before you book.

What has to be left out

Cairo, entirely. The Pyramids, the Sphinx, the Grand Egyptian Museum, Islamic Cairo — none of it fits.

Abu Simbel does not fit either on a standard Nile cruise, because it is three hours south of Aswan by road and needs most of a day. The exception is the Lake Nasser route below, which sails to it.

You will also see only half of Luxor. Luxor deserves two full days on its own, and four days gives it a morning. If that is the part you care about, read east bank or west bank before you choose a boat.

Who four days suits

• Anyone already in Egypt — on a Red Sea holiday, or with work in Cairo — who wants the Nile without rebuilding the trip.
• Repeat visitors who have done Cairo and want the temples at a slower pace.
• Travellers on a regional trip who are adding Egypt to something else.
• It does not suit a first visit to Egypt. If this is your only trip, six days is the honest minimum, and eight is where it stops feeling rushed.

The 34 four-day trips we run

All of them are three nights. They split into three genuinely different products, and the difference matters more than the boat's name.

Five-star Nile cruises, Aswan to Luxor. Large boats, typically 60 to 150 cabins, fixed sailing schedule, guided shore excursions included. Dahabiyas. Small sailing boats, usually eight to twelve cabins, no engine noise for much of the day, and moorings the big boats cannot use. Slower, quieter, and a different holiday rather than a cheaper or dearer one. Lake Nasser cruises. These sail south from Aswan instead of north, and they are the only four-day trips that reach Abu Simbel by water. Different temples, almost no other boats, and you end back in Aswan rather than in Luxor.

How the days usually fall

• Day 1 — board in Aswan, Philae and the quarry in the afternoon, moored overnight.
• Day 2 — sail north, Kom Ombo in the late afternoon.
• Day 3 — Edfu in the morning, through the Esna lock, sail to Luxor.
• Day 4 — one side of Luxor, then disembark.
