All four share the same sea, the same winter warmth and the same coral. What differs is everything on land — and how far you are from the Egypt you probably also came to see.

The deciding question
If the beach is the second half of a Nile trip, geography decides: Hurghada sits four road hours from Luxor, and Marsa Alam about the same — both make an easy sea-after-sights week. Sharm and Dahab sit on Sinai's far side, best reached by air, and suit a trip where the Red Sea is its own destination rather than an appendix.
If the water itself is the trip, choose by diving style. Boat diving at world-class walls: Sharm, with Ras Mohammed on its doorstep. Walking into the sea from the beach with a tank or a snorkel: Dahab or Marsa Alam. Sinai's two towns also hold the inland card — Mount Sinai and Saint Catherine's are an overnight excursion from either.
Honest mismatches to avoid
- Booking Marsa Alam and expecting nightlife, shops or a town. It is a coastline, not a resort city.
- Booking Dahab for a classic pampered resort week — the town's charm is precisely that it is not one.
- Booking Sharm as a Nile add-on and losing half a day each way to the extra flight leg.
- Booking any of them without checking the house reef. On every one of these coasts, hotels metres apart differ between world-class coral and bare sand.
