Overview
Khan el-Khalili is a market district rather than a market building. It occupies a block of lanes in Islamic Cairo that have been in commercial use for something like six hundred years, and it is still a working market for Cairenes as well as a stop on every city tour.
The two halves matter. The outer lanes nearest the main squares are almost entirely aimed at visitors. Walk five minutes further in and you are in workshops where people are actually beating copper.
