Overview

The Alexandria National Museum occupies a palace on Tariq al-Horreya Street, formerly Fouad Street, built for Asaad Basili Pasha. The Supreme Council of Antiquities acquired the property in 1996, converted it, and opened the museum in 2003.

Its collection is usually given as about 1,800 pieces, covering Egyptian history from prehistoric and Pharaonic times through the Graeco-Roman, Coptic and Islamic periods.

Why visit The Alexandria National Museum

It is the easiest way to see Alexandria's history in one place. Most of the old city lies beneath the modern one or under the sea, and this museum gathers objects from every period.

The collection includes a rare group of antiquities recovered from the sea in Abu Qir Bay, a reminder that part of ancient Alexandria is underwater.

It is compact and set in a handsome building, so it works as a short, unhurried visit on a day with the library, the citadel and the corniche.

History of The Alexandria National Museum

The building began as a private palace. Sources disagree on its date: one gives 1926, another says the mansion dated from 1929 and was renovated, and a third attributes the design to Victor Erlanger in 1931.

After the Supreme Council of Antiquities bought the property in 1996, it was converted into a museum and opened to the public in 2003.

One guide describes the first floor as devoted to the Pharaonic period and the middle floor to Graeco-Roman objects. We could not confirm how the upper floor is divided between Coptic and Islamic material.
