Overview

The Manial Palace is a palace and garden estate on Rhoda Island in Cairo, built for Prince Mohammed Ali Tewfik between 1899 and 1929. One Wikipedia infobox gives a start year of 1875, so the beginning of construction is contested.

The prince chose the site himself and oversaw the design and decoration, while the master builder Mohamed Afifi carried out the construction. He began with the Residence Palace and added the other buildings in turn.

It is one of the most unusual buildings in Cairo. Sources describe a blend of Ottoman, Moorish and Persian elements with European Art Nouveau and Rococo touches, so rooms differ sharply from one another.

The palace was built in stages and the prince left instructions for it to become a museum after his death. It was given to the Egyptian nation in 1955.

Travel Tips Before Visiting

Allow time for the grounds. The buildings are spread through a garden estate, so a visit takes longer than the room count suggests. Check Ramadan hours. The ministry portal lists the last entry at 15:00 in Ramadan, against 16:00 the rest of the year. Look at the ceilings and tiles. The richest decoration is overhead and on the walls, and it is easy to miss if you look at floor level.
