Overview
Al-Muizz Street is the historic main street of Fatimid Cairo, named after the caliph al-Mu'izz li-Din Allah, who took Egypt in 969. It runs for about a kilometre between the gate of Bab al-Futuh in the north and Bab Zuweila in the south.
A restoration programme that began in 1997 turned it into what the Egyptian government describes as an open-air museum of Islamic monuments, and it forms part of Historic Cairo, which UNESCO added to the World Heritage List in 1979.
