Seven days is six usable days once travel is deducted, and six usable days is the point at which an Egypt itinerary stops needing compromises explained to it.
You get Cairo properly, the Nile properly, and both sides of Luxor. Nothing on the standard list has to go.
What seven days covers
Cairo takes two to three days. Day one is the Giza plateau and the Sphinx; day two is the Grand Egyptian Museum, which now needs the best part of a day on its own; a third day, if the trip allows it, goes to Saqqara and Dahshur or to Islamic Cairo — Khan el-Khalili, Al-Azhar and the Citadel.
Then you fly south. Aswan gives you Philae, the Unfinished Obelisk and usually a Nubian village visit, and the cruise stops at Kom Ombo and Edfu on the way north.
The real gain over six days is Luxor. Seven days gives Luxor two mornings instead of one, which means Karnak and Luxor Temple on the east bank and the Valley of the Kings with Hatshepsut's temple on the west. That is the difference between seeing Luxor and passing through it.
What still gets left out
Abu Simbel fits only by trading — usually a Cairo day. Whether that trade is right depends on how you feel about a four-hour round trip for one building. It is one of the great buildings.The Red Sea does not fit. Neither does Alexandria, the Western Desert, or Middle Egypt.
The quieter Luxor sites — Medinet Habu, Deir el-Medina, the Valley of the Queens — are all still on the cutting-room floor at seven days. They are the reason people come back.
Who seven days suits
- Almost every first-time visitor, which is why it is the most-booked length.
- Anyone flying long-haul, where a shorter trip means jet lag eats a meaningful share of it.
- Travellers who want slack in the schedule rather than a full one.
- It is not long enough if you want the Red Sea or the desert as well — that is ten days.

Two of those six are not standard Egypt itineraries at all. The adventure tour swaps the Nile for the Western Desert, and the Jordan itinerary spends half the week outside Egypt. Both are good trips; neither is the seven days described above.
